ROAD MAP TO A CYBER SECURITY ROLE

As we slide gradually into the second half of the year, one of two things will happen by the end of 2024. You will look back and realize that:

  • You will be a square peg in a round hole for Cyber security roles. Or
  • You will be good match for a Cyber security role.It’s all up to you.

  • Disclaimer: This is not a sales pitch. Don’t lose your money (hard-earned or “soft-earned”) on most of these “Become-a-this or Become-a-that” programmes in 3 months. This is simply a personal roadmap that I believe anyone can run with for FREE.
  • With a focused approach, it’s achievable to land a job in cyber security within 6 months. Follow this roadmap and put in the time on all steps:
  • Month July-August: Foundational Knowledge- Learn computer systems, networks, and IT concepts- Familiarize yourself with operating systems (Windows, Linux, macOS)- Understand internet and network fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, etc.)- CompTIA A+ certification (or equivalent)
  • Month September-October: Cyber Security Fundamentals- Learn cyber security basics, threats, and vulnerabilities- Understand security concepts (CIA triad, access control, encryption)- Familiarize yourself with security frameworks and regulations (NIST, HIPAA, etc.)- CompTIA Security+ certification (or equivalent)
  • Month November-December: Specialization and Hands-on Experience- Choose a specialization (penetration testing, incident response, security analysis)- Learn tools and technologies (Nmap, Burp Suite, Splunk, etc.)- Gain hands-on experience through labs, simulations, or real-world projects- Build a personal project or contribute to open-source security tools
  • Additionally:- Network with cyber security professionals through online communities (LinkedIn, Reddit, etc.)- Attend webinars, workshops, or conferences to learn from industry experts- Tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight your new skills and knowledge- Practice whiteboarding exercises to improve your problem-solving skills.

By focusing on the most critical aspects of cyber security and dedicating yourself to intense learning, you can increase your chances of landing a job in the field within 6 months.
